George joins us from Glasgow, Scotland, where he has helped build coverage and awareness of the sport through College Chaps and Touchdown UK.

The timing could not be better.

This week came the announcement that Syracuse Orange football and Wake Forest Demon Deacons football will open the 2027 season in Canada, another major sign that college football is beginning to think globally in a way it never truly has before.

George explains why this matters, why interest overseas is growing rapidly, and why American administrators may only be scratching the surface of what the sport could become internationally.

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation is how much groundwork the NFL has already laid overseas. The league’s presence in London has transformed over the last decade from a novelty into something much more substantial. Fans in the UK now consume the sport year-round. Games at Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are major events, and younger fans are increasingly growing up with American football as part of their sports culture.

George specifically discusses the role the Jacksonville Jaguars have played in helping build the game internationally. Their consistent commitment to London games and overseas branding helped normalize the NFL abroad and created long-term engagement instead of one-off spectacles.

We also spend time discussing the NFL Academy in England and why it could become one of the most important developmental pipelines for the future of the sport. The academy has opened doors for international athletes to develop at a higher level and potentially reach American colleges and eventually the NFL itself.

George will also be covering this year’s Union Jack Classic between Kansas Jayhawks football and Arizona State Sun Devils football at Wembley Stadium, and he explains why events like this are so important for exposing international audiences to the pageantry and emotion that make college football different from every other sport.

This was one of my favorite conversations in a while because it reminds us that the game we often take for granted here in America still feels fresh, unique and fascinating to millions of people around the world.

And if college football leadership is smart, they’ll realize there’s an enormous opportunity sitting right in front of them.

Topics Covered

Syracuse and Wake Forest opening the 2027 season in Canada

The growth of American football fandom in the UK

Why the NFL’s international strategy has worked

The Jaguars’ impact overseas

The NFL Academy and player development

The Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium

Why college football’s atmosphere translates globally

Listen now on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Subscribe to Show Pony Media for more college football coverage, media insight and daily conversation around the evolving future of sports.

Show Pony Live! Or have they become an extra layer of risk in an already bloated postseason structure?

We discuss why the sport’s leaders are increasingly looking at streamlining the calendar, how television inventory impacts every decision being made and whether college football may already be approaching a dangerous tipping point.

Because while expansion creates more access, it also creates a new problem:

Can too much postseason eventually water down the regular season?

That’s where Dusty delivers one of the most interesting perspectives of the interview. We talk about the balancing act college football faces moving forward — protecting the intensity and urgency that has always made the sport unique while still chasing larger playoff formats and bigger television dollars.

The regular season has always been college football’s superpower. Lose twice and your season could be over. Every Saturday mattered. But if expansion continues, does the sport risk becoming more like every other postseason-driven league?

Dusty gives thoughtful insight from both the television and football side of the equation.

We also spend time discussing Dusty’s own journey into broadcasting after his playing career ended.

It’s a tremendous story about relationships, preparation and maximizing opportunities.

Dusty explains how a relationship with Kirk Herbstreit helped open the first major door for him at ESPN. Herbstreit connected him with ESPN’s leadership during a time when Dusty was trying to figure out what life after football looked like.

But as Dusty makes clear during the conversation, getting an opportunity is only the beginning.

Whether it’s football or broadcasting, the real challenge is staying there.

Once you get the job, you have to evolve, improve and work relentlessly to keep it.

It’s a terrific conversation about college football, media, opportunity and the changing landscape of both industries.

🎧 Listen now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and everywhere podcasts are available.

📺 You can also watch the full episode on YouTube and X.

And if you’re enjoying what we’re building at Show Pony Media, consider becoming a paid subscriber. I grew up loving the rhythm of the game, the tension of a 2-1 count in the seventh inning, the tradition, the strategy, the beauty of a lazy summer night at the ballpark. Banana Ball doesn’t really appeal to me stylistically.

But Jesse Cole?

I believe in him completely.

Because I think he might be the best businessman in America.

Not because he’s squeezing every penny possible out of consumers. Not because he found some Wall Street formula to maximize profit margins. Not because he turned fans into walking ATM machines.

No.

Jesse Cole understands something the rest of sports has forgotten:

Fans matter most.

Not shareholders.

Not investors.

Not television consultants.

Not private equity firms.

Fans.

That’s why universities should be studying his methods in business schools. Sports management programs should be dissecting what he’s built in Savannah. College presidents should be forced to sit through seminars on why people are emotionally connecting to the Bananas while so much of modern sports feels colder by the day.

Jesse Cole created an experience where fans know they come first.

That matters.

He intentionally tries to make the upper-deck experience feel as special as the 100-level seats. Think about that for a second. In modern sports, most organizations are actively trying to separate people by wealth class. Better clubs. Better entrances. Better parking. Better experiences for richer people.

Cole is trying to elevate everybody.

That’s the opposite of modern sports business philosophy.

Most sports owners today are obsessed with extracting every possible dollar from consumers. Ticket prices explode. Parking is outrageous. Merchandise costs a fortune. Streaming packages multiply. Food prices become laughable. Everybody has their hand in your wallet before you even sit down.

And somehow, after all that, fans are still treated like an inconvenience.

Look at what’s happening with WWE under TKO Group Holdings.

They’re cutting wrestler salaries while executives and investors cash massive checks. WrestleMania now looks like the Yellow Pages exploded inside a wrestling ring. Ads everywhere. Long sponsor integrations jammed into the middle of matches. Everything feels monetized.

The fan experience deteriorates while profits soar.

That’s modern sports in America.

College sports isn’t much different anymore.

It’s become Shake Down Street.

Want to follow your favorite college football team? Better be ready to spend thousands.

Tickets.

Hotels.

Flights.

Tailgating.

Streaming subscriptions.

Parking.

Merchandise.

Donations.

Seat licenses.

It never ends.

And after all that spending, what does the fan get in return?

Usually another price increase.

That greed is a huge reason college sports is now begging Congress for help. The NCAA and university leadership created this chaos through years of short-sighted decision-making driven by money above all else.

They forgot who built the industry in the first place.

The fans.

And yes, the student-athlete matters deeply. Of course they do.

But fans matter too. More than college sports leadership wants to admit.

Without fans, none of this exists.

None of it.

LeBron James isn’t LeBron James if nobody watches.

Tom Brady isn’t Tom Brady if nobody cares.

There are millions of incredibly talented people in this world nobody pays attention to. Talent alone is not enough. The audience matters. Emotional connection matters. Community matters.

Fans are everything.

They are the money.

They are the energy.

They are the atmosphere.

They are the television ratings.

They are the reason any of this exists at all.

And sports keeps treating them worse and worse.

That’s why Jesse Cole stands out so dramatically.

He treats fans like royalty.

He wants people leaving the ballpark feeling joy instead of financial guilt. He wants families to create memories instead of calculating credit card balances. He wants fans to feel appreciated rather than exploited.

That shouldn’t feel revolutionary.

But in 2026, somehow it does.

College sports desperately needs more Jesse Cole.

Not more consultants.

Not more television executives.

Not more private capital.

More people who actually understand the emotional responsibility that comes with asking fans to care.

Because once fans stop caring, the whole thing collapses.

ShowPonyMedia.com:

If this hit home, share it with a sports fan who feels like the games they love keep asking for more while giving less back. Comment below if you agree or disagree that college sports need to cater more to their fans.

Show Pony Media is a reader-supported publication. during COVID.

That stretch changed everything about what we do.

I’ve been in this business for over 20 years. I’ve seen different eras. Different styles. Different platforms.

But COVID accelerated something that was already coming.

Studios shut down. People went remote. Everyone had time.

And suddenly…

Everybody had a microphone.

At the same time, podcasts exploded. YouTube habits took over. The barrier to entry disappeared.

Now look — that part is great.

More opportunity. More voices. More creativity.

I mean that.

But there’s another side to it.

And I don’t think we say this enough:

Broadcasting skills are slipping.

Badly.

I hear it every day.

People talking with no direction.

Segments that don’t go anywhere.

No pacing. No structure. No understanding of how to actually build a show.

It’s just talking.

And somewhere along the way, we started acting like that was enough.

This drives me crazy. As a VSIN executive and former SiriusXM Sports VP said to me on air last week, “Who is teaching these people how to broadcast?”

The answer is likely: nobody.

Then I Went Back to School

Three years ago, I made a decision that probably surprised some people.

I went back and got my master’s in journalism and media from the University of Alabama.

The reason? I want to teach. I want to give back and pour into people with big dreams who just need direction and structure.

I had people do that for me as a young dreamer. Now I want to do it for the next generation.

I graduated from Alabama a year ago.

And since then, I’ve been asked to be part of the College of Communication & Information Sciences Board of Visitors.

That’s given me a different perspective.

A closer look at academia.

Some students still have those big dreams. They tend to be the ones who actually study journalism at places like Alabama.

But look around at what you get fed on your social media feeds. How many of those “broadcasters” do you think were actually trained properly in electronic journalism?

They know how to go viral — but little else.

That brings me to another issue.

The pursuit of viral clicks often leads to exaggerated content — and sometimes the spread of misinformation.

That pursuit of attention has contributed to the breakdown of modern journalism habits in America and beyond.

What We Used to Want

When I was coming up, we wanted to be great.

Not famous.

Great.

As a young broadcaster, mastering the art form was my greatest goal.

If you were in sports, you wanted to sound like Chris Berman or Dan Patrick.

Two of the best communicators and entertainers we’ve ever had.

If you leaned news, it was Connie Chung, Ann Curry, Dan Rather, Peter Jennings.

There was a standard.

There was an art to it.

Now?

A lot of young people want to be like their favorite social media creator.

Someone who built a massive following. Someone making real money off their brand — whether it’s influencers, personalities, or viral content machines.

And listen — no disrespect.

That’s a skill.

A real one.

Content creation is marketing. It’s creativity. It’s understanding an audience.

I respect it.

But it’s not the same thing as broadcasting.

And we’ve started to blur those lines.

The Part That Worries Me

When I speak to students — I was just at a digital media class at Middle Tennessee State — you can feel it.

They’re creative. They’re motivated. They want to make things.

But their frame of reference is different.

They’re chasing viral and followers.

We were chasing quality.

That doesn’t make them wrong.

But it does create a gap.

Because broadcasting — real broadcasting — is an art.

Guys like Vin Scully and Keith Jackson weren’t just talking.

They were painting pictures.

They understood pacing. Tone. Timing. Silence.

They understood communication at the highest level.

And communication itself is slipping.

People don’t talk on the phone as much anymore.

They don’t have as many face-to-face conversations.

Everything is quick. Texted. Posted. Skipped through.

That impacts how people communicate.

And if communication slips…

Broadcasting follows.

stories.

Stories about packed apartment buildings near Wrigley Field where it felt like the entire family lived under one roof. Stories about Hull House and Jane Addams, where my grandmother Carmen once stood as a young girl, part of something bigger than herself.

Stories about what it meant to be Italian in America when it wasn’t always easy to be.

Scrappy. Proud. Loud. Loyal.

Family first. Always.

And then… there was him.

The greatest man who ever lived.

Joe Garbula.

You’ve never heard of him?

Come on. Get yourself together.

Joe Garbula did everything.

And I mean everything.

In a single year, he won the Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the World Series, and the Heisman Trophy, all probably before lunch.

He cured diseases in the afternoon. Negotiated peace treaties by dinner. By night? Who knows. Probably saving the world again.

A legend.

A myth.

A complete and total fabrication. A legend of my family.

Joe Garbula was born on the steps of an old Chicago apartment building—created out of nothing by my grandfather George Colangelo and my uncle Angelo Martino.

Two guys sitting around, probably arguing about sports, probably laughing, probably doing what Italians do best—turning nothing into something unforgettable.

One question. One made-up answer.

“Who won that boxing title?” (Boxing was huge back then, especially for Italian-Americans who worshipped Rocky Marciano)

“I don’t know… probably Joe Garbula.”

And just like that, immortality.

I didn’t know any of this at first.

I just knew that every time we sat down for dinner—whether it was at home or at Armand’s or O’Fame with family—Joe Garbula would somehow come up.

And every single time… he’d done something even more incredible than the last time.

Four goals in a Stanley Cup period.
A 100-point Game 7 in the NBA Finals.
Saving nations. Healing people. Transcending time itself.

And everyone at the table played along.

No one broke character.

No one said, “this isn’t real.”

Because that wasn’t the point.

The point was joy.

The point was imagination.

The point was family.

Looking back now, I realize something I didn’t understand as a kid:

Joe Garbula wasn’t just a joke.

He was a reflection.

Of George Colangelo’s warmth.
Of Angelo Martino’s humor.
Of a generation that didn’t need much—but made everything out of what they had.

They built stories the same way they built their lives.

Together.

And now they’re gone.

My grandfather. My uncle.

The voices that made those dinners louder. The laughs that made those stories bigger. The presence that made everything feel… complete.

Gone.

But somehow… not really.

Because Joe Garbula is still out there.

Still winning championships. Still saving the world. Still showing up at dinner tables—if you’re paying attention.

We all have our versions of this.

Our own “Big Fish” stories. The ones that grow a little bigger every time they’re told. The ones that blur the line between truth and myth until it doesn’t matter anymore.

Because the facts were never the point.

The feeling was.

I used to think about ways to keep it alive.

Maybe a Chicago-style Italian beef shop in Nashville called Joe Garbula’s. Pictures on the wall. A mustached Italian man shaking hands with presidents, hoisting trophies, standing next to legends like Babe Ruth—never aging, always present.

Because of course he is.

He’s Joe Garbula.

But now I think I understand something better.

You don’t preserve stories like this in buildings or businesses.

You preserve them by telling them.

By passing them down.

By refusing to let them disappear.

So this is me doing my part.

This is me making sure the world knows about Joe Garbula.

But more importantly—

This is me honoring the two men who created him.

My grandfather, George Colangelo.
My uncle, Angelo Martino.

Two guys from Chicago who didn’t just tell stories.

They gave me one.

And I’ll carry it forever.

Show Pony Media is a reader-supported publication. And look—I get it. It’s a win for Duke. It’s a win for exposure. It’s a win for money.

But for the fan?
It’s exhausting.

College and pro sports are now scattered across a dozen different platforms. It’s not just expensive—it’s inconvenient. You don’t know where anything is anymore. You’re bouncing between apps, passwords, subscriptions… just trying to watch a game.

And that’s before we even get to entertainment.

Streaming was supposed to simplify things. Instead, it’s become overwhelming. Too many shows. Too many options. Not enough quality. We’ve gone from quality over quantity in the late ’90s and early 2000s—when storytelling, cinematography, and craftsmanship mattered—to an endless content dump.

Now?
You spend more time trying to find something to watch than actually watching it.

At some point, we need to streamline this thing. Get it back to something that resembles what cable used to be—simple, centralized, and easy.

I also dive into something that should concern every college sports fan: the Big 12 Conference announced a deal with private capital investment.

That’s a dangerous road.

These are public institutions. They’re supposed to serve the public—not operate like private equity playgrounds. When private business fails, it impacts a controlled group. When college athletics shifts this way, it impacts entire states, universities, and communities.

That line matters. And we’re getting close to crossing it.

Plus, I play a great clip from Full Ride this week—TNA ring announcer McKenzie Mitchell sharing how she got her start while working for Ole Miss athletics, and how former AD Ross Bjork helped point her toward wrestling. data-component-name="MentionToDOM">

Horowitz earned it the hard way

There are interviews you do because the guest has a cool job.

Then there are interviews where, about halfway through, you realize: every young broadcaster needs to hear this conversation.

That’s how I felt talking with Jason Horowitz.

Yes, he’s the radio voice of the Las Vegas Raiders. Yes, that alone is a dream seat in the business. But what struck me most wasn’t just where he ended up. It was how he got there.

Because Jason didn’t skip steps. He didn’t wake up in the NFL booth one day. He built it the hard way — through reps, adaptability, relationships, and professionalism.

First With CBS SportsLine Before Digital Was Cool

Before streaming, before everyone wanted to be “multi-platform,” before digital talent became standard, Horowitz was the first major on-air face of CBS SportsLine.

Think about that. He was doing modern media work before most people even understood where media was heading. Including Jason.

That role required range. Hosting. Reading live situations. Connecting with audiences online. Moving fast. Thinking faster.

He wasn’t just early. He was ahead.

Then he moved into calling games for CBS Sports Network. Much like I did, he got his break because an announcer previously scheduled to work was ill. Horowitz was ready to take advantage, regardless of the assignment. He knew he had to take assignments that weren’t glamorous but were priceless for growth. Empty gyms. Smaller events. Games casual fans ignored. Those reps matter more than people realize. That’s where pacing gets sharpened. That’s where instincts get built. That’s where professionals separate from dreamers. This is the famous process of paying your dues.

Prestigious Jobs Go to Real Talent

Jason now holds some of the best live-event assignments in sports media.

Every year he hosts Westwood One’s March Madness coverage, one of the most prestigious jobs in sports audio. When the bracket explodes, buzzer-beaters are dropping, coaches are melting down, and America is locked in — he’s steering the ship.

He also hosts the annual NFL Draft on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Another pressure-packed assignment with constant moving parts, breaking news, trades, chaos, and nonstop analysis.

Those jobs are not handed out casually. They go to people who can deliver live.

And Jason can flat-out deliver.

His greatest gift may be his ability to react in real time. Some broadcasters freeze when the moment speeds up. Horowitz gets better. He processes chaos instantly, keeps listeners oriented, adds energy without overdoing it, and sounds in command while everything is moving.

That’s why he excels in play-by-play. That’s why he excels in tournaments. That’s why he excels in the Draft.

Some people can host. Some can call games. Very few can do both at an elite level. Jason can.

Syracuse Still Leads the Field

Jason is also a graduate of Syracuse University.

Yes, a lot has changed since he was there 20 years ago. Media looks nothing like it once did. Podcasts, YouTube, TikTok, remote production, AI tools, creator brands — the whole landscape is different.

But one thing hasn’t changed: Syracuse still knows how to produce talent.

They proudly remind students of the legends who came through there, and frankly, they should. The alumni list is ridiculous:

Bob Costas

Mike Tirico

Sean McDonough

Ian Eagle

Marty Glickman

The technology changes. The platforms change. But fundamentals still matter: writing, voice control, timing, storytelling, curiosity, preparation, professionalism. Syracuse still leads because those skills still win.

The Most Underrated Career Skill: Be Easy to Work With

This was my favorite part of our conversation. Jason talked about the importance of being easy to work with.

That sounds simple. It isn’t.

Prepared. Respectful. Reliable. Collaborative. Low drama. Professional. Kind.

Those traits are gold in this business.

I’ve been in radio more than 20 years. I’ve seen talented people sabotage themselves because they were exhausting. Massive ego. Constant complaining. Needlessly rude. Treating staff poorly. Confusing being difficult with being important.

That stuff catches up to people. Fast.

And let me add this: I recently watched the so-called “manosphere” documentary on Netflix. If your life philosophy is built around bitterness, dominance, contempt, or treating people like they’re disposable, you are headed for misery.

Do not listen to that nonsense.

How you treat people matters. In life. In business. In broadcasting. In marriage. In friendships. Everywhere.

Jason Horowitz is proof you can be talented and decent. In fact, that combination is powerful.

Jason’s story is one young broadcasters, content creators, and anyone chasing a dream career should hear.

He didn’t walk straight into the NFL. He built it brick by brick.

We discuss how he took early opportunities calling games few people were watching, worked long hours for modest pay, built trust with people in the business, and stayed professional every step of the way. That path eventually led to one of the best jobs in sports media.

The lesson is simple: talent matters, but reliability, kindness, preparation, and being easy to work with matter just as much. Sometimes more.

Too many people sabotage themselves by being difficult, entitled, or impossible to manage. Horowitz is proof that professionalism still wins.

We also hit today’s biggest stories:

New details involving Brendan Sorsby and why it could create major concern for Texas Tech Red Raiders

Jameson Williams seeking compensation tied to the pre-NIL era

A.J. humming.

The NFL Draft just wrapped, and once again it reminded us how wrong “way-too-early” projections can be. Names once penciled into the first round slid, surprise risers emerged, and the entire quarterback market shifted in real time. We’ll talk about what that says about scouting, hype cycles, and the volatility of modern roster building.

We’re also hitting one of the most fascinating college football stories in the country: Texas Tech, Brendan Sorsby, NIL money, and the gambling cloud now hanging over a major investment. If programs are spending big, what happens when off-field questions enter the picture?

And yes—we’ll discuss the latest transfer portal and quarterback ripple effects now that the draft dust has settled.

This won’t be hot-take nonsense. It’ll be real talk about leverage, money, development, pressure, and where college sports are headed next.

Tonight’s Show Pony Live:
📍 Streaming live on Right now, Michigan may be the clearest example of what selling your soul to win can look like.

Yes, Michigan football reached the mountaintop with a national championship. Nobody can take the banner down. Nobody can erase the parade. But what has followed has been ugly, chaotic, embarrassing, and revealing.

And if I’m LSU or any other major program flirting with the idea that winning at all costs is worth it, I’d study Michigan closely.

Because the bill always comes due.

Meanwhile, thank God for Dusty May if you’re a Michigan fan. At least the basketball program has momentum and hope after reaching the top of the sport this season. But the football side? It continues to vomit on itself.

The Sherrone Moore Mess

This week, Paige Shivers appeared on Good Morning America and painted a troubling picture of her time at Michigan while working as a football staffer and her alleged relationship with Sherrone Moore.

The details are strange and disturbing. The optics are worse.

Moore, already under pressure as Jim Harbaugh’s successor when he got the job and had to deal with fallout from NCAA issues surrounding the previous regime, now finds himself connected to a scandal that damages both his credibility and the university’s image.

Whether lawsuits follow or not, Michigan now has another mess tied to a football program that already spent years skating on thin ice.

And this is what bothers me most about modern coaching culture:

Too many of these guys preach discipline, accountability, sacrifice, commitment, character—and then live by a completely different code when nobody’s watching.

Why Coaches Meant So Much to Me

As I’ve gotten older, one of the more disappointing realities of life is realizing how often people you respected let you down.

Politicians. Doctors. Police officers. And yes, football coaches.

At their purest, these are noble callings.

A football coach should be a leader. A builder of men. A teacher. A motivator.

I still think about coaches from my youth with enormous gratitude.

Guys like Glen Kozlowski, the former Chicago Bear, who gave kids structure and toughness.

And Jon Teichman—maybe the greatest Pop Warner coach I ever saw.

Teichman could rip your rear end in practice, but you always knew it came from a place of caring. He loved to call me “Sally” or “Mickey Mouse” and tell me I was soft. I honestly loved it. You knew he was trying to get the best out of you. He taught discipline, detail, and the beauty of the game.

That kind of coach leaves fingerprints on your life forever.

Lou Holtz Was a Hero to Kids Like Me

When I was young, Lou Holtz was larger than life.

I lived for his speeches. His energy. His message. Here was this small man motivating and commanding gigantic football players, 3 times his size, through sheer force of leadership.

He seemed like the embodiment of discipline and virtue.

That’s what many of us thought coaches were.

Then you grow older and realize some of them are among the biggest hypocrites walking.

Now, let me be clear: there are tremendous coaches out there. Men of character. Teachers who genuinely put players first. Leaders who sacrifice for the right reasons. Neuheisel is one of them.

But too many others are frauds dressed as mentors.

And every time a scandal hits, it chips away at what coaching is supposed to mean.

Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Legacy Is Complicated

Look honestly at what built Sherrone Moore.

Jim Harbaugh built it.

Harbaugh delivered the title Michigan fans craved. He beat Ohio State. He restored swagger. He changed the trajectory of the program.

But the fallout has been nonstop: investigations, controversies, suspensions, staff drama, and now this.

Was the championship worth it?

Michigan fans will say yes.

But institutions should ask deeper questions than fans do.

The Real Victim Here

Whenever stories like this break, there’s collateral damage everywhere.

If the allegations are true, Paige Shivers may have been manipulated by a man in a position of authority.

But the person most often forgotten in stories like these is the spouse.

Mrs. Moore didn’t sign up for public humiliation.

She’s the one left in the wreckage.

And too often in college football, wives and families are the silent casualties while powerful men chase ego and indulgence.

Live in Nashville: Titans Draft Night Theater

Now let’s pivot from scandal to comedy.

Last night I joined Jared Stillman for a live NFL Draft show at M.L. Rose in East Nashville during a Titans draft party hosted by Braden Gall and 440 Sports.

a year after he steps down as athletic director on June 30. UK President Eli Capilouto announced the change Thursday, saying Barnhart told him the controversy had become “a distraction from the work of our university.”

A distraction?

Show Pony Media is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Please.

This was not some unfortunate misunderstanding. This was a public institution trying to slide a sweetheart deal past the very people who deserve accountability. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear had already blasted the arrangement, saying the university created a nearly $1 million job with no defined duties. That is not nitpicking. That is the entire issue.

And that is why the “distraction” language falls flat.

This did not go away because the university suddenly saw the light. It went away because people noticed. It went away because the governor spoke up. It went away because the public reaction was fierce, and rightly so. In other words, Mitch Barnhart and Kentucky leadership did not voluntarily correct this.

They got caught.

Rick Neuheisel made a smart point on our show today. If Kentucky had come forward and said Barnhart was taking on a real role with a clear job description, measurable goals, and responsibility for raising tens of millions of dollars, then maybe you could at least have a legitimate conversation about the compensation. If he was truly going to generate massive revenue and the university could clearly explain the value, then fine. Make the case.

But they did not.

That is the tell.

If this job was so essential, why could the university not explain exactly what Barnhart would be doing? Why could it not lay out the responsibilities in plain English? Why could it not sell the public on the need for the position at the very moment scrutiny was at its highest?

Because it could not.

Instead, Kentucky backed away.

And it should have.

Capilouto also said Barnhart’s exit compensation will now be covered through private fundraising rather than university or athletic department funds. That may change the bookkeeping, but it does not change the larger point: this arrangement was always terrible optics and even worse judgment. This was arrogance at its finest. Abuse of power at its finest. An exploitation of a public institution.

Here is my bigger issue with Barnhart: this controversy is not happening in a vacuum.

For years, Kentucky fans have watched the athletic department drift away from the standard that made that place matter nationally. This is a program that should operate with clarity, force, and ambition. Instead, too often it has felt like ego, politics, and self-preservation have won the day.

Look at basketball. John Calipari left Kentucky in April 2024 after 15 years, saying the program “probably needs to hear another voice.” Whether you blame Calipari, Barnhart, or both, it is impossible to ignore that one of the most important relationships in college sports ended with Kentucky losing one of the biggest brands in the game.

Now Big Blue Nation is left trying to convince itself that all of this is normal. That all of this is fine. That this is just part of doing business at a major university.

They know better.

No, it is not.

This is Kentucky. The standards are supposed to be higher. The judgment is supposed to be better. And the people in charge are supposed to understand that public trust matters.

The university should be run with the utmost care, not like an organized crime outfit.

So yes, Barnhart is doing the right thing by walking away from the post-retirement job.

But let us not pretend this is some act of selfless service.

This is a retreat.

This is damage control.

This is what happens when power gets too comfortable, the public pushes back, and the people in charge realize they cannot spin their way out of it.

Kentucky leadership tried to sneak this one through.

They failed.

And now they want credit for backing off.

They do not get credit for stopping something that never should have been attempted in the first place.

Let Kentucky be an example for all of us. We need to hold the rich and powerful accountable, especially when they abuse resources that belong to the taxpaying public.

And if you are tired of watching powerful people treat public institutions like private playgrounds, stick with me.

Because I am going to keep calling it exactly like I see it.

If you want more unfiltered takes on college sports, power, money, media, and the stories people in charge hope you stop talking about, subscribe to Show Pony Media.

This is independent media.
