I know Mike Denbrock. I know Lance Leipold.
Have I talked to either of them about Maryland? No.
Do I know whether either would want the job? Nope.
But do I believe Maryland would be making a mistake by not seriously pursuing them?
In my bones.
Before we get into that, a word about Mike Locksley. He gave a terrific interview to ESPN’s Heather Dinich today, and the way he is handling his departure deserves recognition. There is class in how you carry yourself when things go your way. There is another kind when they don’t. Locksley is showing plenty of it.
Maryland fans can believe it was time for a change and still appreciate the man. He won three bowl games there. His tenure deserves to be remembered for more than how it ended. Ultimately, I hope Maryland loves him back.
Now comes the difficult part: finding someone who can build something that lasts.
I understand the excitement around the next rising star. I get excited about those guys, too. But there are two coaches I keep coming back to because of what I know about them, how they treat people and how deeply they understand football.
Give me a builder. And give that builder an actual chance.
