Ryan McGee has a voice and a storytelling style all his own. Today, we get into the story behind both.
The ESPN writer and co-host of Marty & McGee joins me for a conversation about how he and Marty Smith got started, their shared background in motorsports, and the road that brought them to one of the most recognizable partnerships in college sports.
I wanted to know how a guy with a Southern accent and a background behind the scenes as a producer found his way into writing and, eventually, in front of the microphone. How did Ryan find his voice? And how did he build a career around being himself?
We also talk about what makes Marty & McGee work, the personalities behind the show, and the experiences that shaped them along the way.

Then we get into SEC football, Ryan’s experiences with SEC Nation so far this season, and what he’s seen while spending his Saturdays around the league.
Of course, we preview Texas–Oklahoma, a rivalry with an atmosphere that deserves its own conversation. And when you’re heading to the State Fair of Texas, football is only part of the assignment.
I ask Ryan what he’s most looking forward to eating at a fair famous for its food. Come for the football conversation. Stay for the appetite.
