Spring Games Were Once Magical For Young Fans, Are They Still?
When I was young, access meant everything—and loyalty meant even more
Spring football.
I remember as a kid thinking spring games were the coolest thing in the world. Not because the game itself mattered—it didn’t. The score was irrelevant. The stakes? Nonexistent.
But the feeling? Everything. Being on campus? The best!
As a kid growing up the biggest Notre Dame fan on the planet, the spring game felt like the ultimate backstage pass to something sacred.
I can still see it. Seventh grade. My dad takes me to South Bend for the first time. Lou Holtz—my idol—is pacing the sideline. I thought I had stepped into the greatest day of my life.
Why?
Access.
